There's a rich history for the Gran Turismo. A history of going great distances at incredible speeds. And stowing enough in the back that going home becomes optional. With great power and incredible storage, the 5 Series Gran Turismo is the bold BMW answer to the call of the open road.

With the route taken care of, you can concentrate on more important things - like enjoying every twist and turn along the way. Our optional onboard navigation system, controlled via iDrive, uses GPS satellites, a digital map and, where available, Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) to guide you to your destination. Choose the fastest route, the shortest route or the one that avoids traffic. Where available, traffic information is received by a separate radio tuner and then displayed on the navigation system. You don't have to listen to a specific radio station, or even have the radio on, to receive updates every few minutes. And you can see everything clearly on the large, high-resolution screen.

It's a simple idea, really: the better your focus is on the road, the more in control you'll be of any driving situation. Our optional Head-Up Display* gives you the ability to see relevant information such as speed and navigation directions, without the need to look down and lose sight of what's ahead of you. The readout appears just beyond the windshield, in your line of vision. It is clear, easy to read, and even responds to light, adjusting its brightness for daytime, nighttime or hazy conditions, so driving is more enjoyable. * Not available with green band windshield.

Driver and passengers enjoy a newfound sense of space and freedom with the 5 Series Gran Turismo panoramic roof. Whether open or closed, the extra-large, dual-glass panels let in warm sunlight by day and a beautiful starry vista at night. Easy-to-use features include a power slide and lift control, comfort opening and closing function, wind deflector, and power sunshade to shield passengers from excessive glare and heat.

The interior is designed to spoil not just the driver, but the passengers as well. In the rear, ample legroom offers comfort for up to three passengers. Or, the optional Luxury Rear Seating Package provides two individual, multi-adjustable power seats, separated by a center console.

For lesser storage needs, the trunk lid offers enough space to store items while the cabin interior remains unaffected by cold, heat, or drafts. For greater storage needs, the large tailgate opens to allow for more than 60 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded down, offering a wide loading bay for oversized items. From golf bags to baby carriages to ski and board equipment, everything is easily loaded and unloaded into this large area at the press of a button on your key.

iPod/iPhone USB Integrated System

When we wanted to connect an MP3 player directly to our vehicle's sound system, we went straight to the experts at Apple. Together, we created the world's first seamless integrated system of iPod and automobile. Just plug your iPod or iPhone into the adapter accessory. Control the volume and your playlists through the multifunction steering wheel, while your iPod or iPhone stays out of view with a constant flow of power. There's also a convenient, standard auxiliary input jack, which allows you to play any MP3 through the audio system.

iDrive with Connected Drive

All information, entertainment and comfort features are controlled via the enhanced iDrive system. The new system features a larger, 10.25-inch, high-resolution display; more intuitive controls; and four direct-entry buttons for accessing radio, CD, telephone, and navigational features. At the touch of a button, BMW ConnectedDrive enhances the iDrive experience with a team of trained response specialists available to provide you with enhanced roadside assistance.

Logic7 Audio System

It's a sound experience as remarkable as the BMW driving experience. Unlike traditional stereo systems, Logic7 routes two-channel (stereo) sound through a seven-channel playback matrix to create 360-degree Surround Sound. The anti-theft AM/FM stereo CD/MP3 player audio system includes 13 upgraded speakers (including 2 subwoofers), Digital Sound Processing (DSP), Radio Data System (RDS), Auto-Store and 3-channel FM diversity antenna, and it displays MP3 song title and artist.

HD Radio™

There are over 1,300 nationwide AM and FM stations with optional HD Radio technology. Meanwhile, over 600 stations also include multicasting options, displaying the artist and track names of songs as they play.

TwinPower Turbo V8 Engine

With 4.4 liters and 400 hp, the 5 Series Gran Turismo TwinPower Turbo V-8 with a newly designed 8-speed automatic transmission is nothing short of incredible.

Integral Active Steering

At low speeds, Integral Active Steering allows for greater nimbleness around corners, while at high speeds and in rain or snow, it provides greater precision and stability.

Adaptive Drive

The 5 Series Gran Turismo allows the drivers to adapt the ride to suit their tastes by selecting from four distinct modes. In addition to NORMAL mode, drivers can customize their experience with COMFORT, SPORT, and SPORT+ modes. The first, COMFORT mode, utilizes the suspension to lessen the impact of the road, while more power assist is directed to the steering, resulting in easier maneuverability. SPORT mode makes for more rigid suspension and offers a quicker throttle response and tighter shift points. As a result, drivers are more connected to the road, thus enjoying a more precise control. Finally, in SPORT+ mode, all driving dynamics are further heightened. The suspension is even more rigid, the throttle response even quicker, and the shift points are closer together.

There is an undeniable power to 400 horses. And with an 8-speed automatic transmission and multiple innovative technologies, it’s as easy as ever to harness this power. Active Cruise Control with radar-based sensing helps the driver maintain a safe distance from traffic ahead.

Night Vision with Pedestrian Recognition

Optional BMW Night Vision allows drivers to see animals and pedestrians over 900 feet (or 300 meters) ahead—in the dark. Utilizing infrared technology from the vehicle's built-in, front camera, the 5 Series Gran Turismo displays potential road hazards on the navigation system monitor so that drivers might avoid them well before they are visible to the naked eye. In the 5 Series, Night Vision Pedestrian Detection technology distinguishes between animals and humans and alerts the driver accordingly. At a closer range, it identifies their position and the direction in which they are moving. If a pedestrian approaches or crosses the road, thermal imaging technology alerts drivers by displaying a symbol in the control panel and, if equipped, on the Head-Up Display.

Active Blind Spot Detection

Looking forward isn't just a metaphor for our insatiable desire to innovate. It's also quite literal. The available Active Blind Spot Detection system helps eliminate blind spots and actually allows drivers to avoid collisions when changing lanes, literally keeping your gaze straight ahead. Using radar sensors at the rear of the vehicle to monitor the traffic behind it, this system alerts drivers if a vehicle is in their blind spot by displaying a light on their side-view mirror housings. And on the chance the driver does not notice the warning and signals to indicate changing lanes, the light on the mirror housing begins to flash and the steering wheel vibrates.

Multi-View Camera

An innovative set of safety features offers extensive knowledge of your surroundings. With rearview, sideview, and 270º topview cameras, parking and navigating traffic have never been easier. Multiple Advanced Blind Spot Detection indicators, including a blinking display and vibrating steering wheel, help eliminate blind spots. And with Adaptive Headlights and Enhanced Braking, seeing what’s ahead is as natural as stopping for it.

BMW Assist

Beyond the standard functions, the new iDrive system also accesses BMW Assist services. The BMW Assist Safety Plan—included for four years at no extra costs—offers an arsenal of safety, security, and convenience services. Trained response specialists are available at the touch of a button, ready to provide you with enhanced roadside assistance. The system also includes Bluetooth hands-free calling capabilities with speech recognition.
