With the route taken care of, you can concentrate on more important things - like enjoying every twist and turn along the way. Our optional onboard navigation system, controlled via iDrive, uses GPS satellites, a digital map and, where available, Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) to guide you to your destination. Choose the fastest route, the shortest route or the one that avoids traffic. Where available, traffic information is received by a separate radio tuner and then displayed on the navigation system. You don't have to listen to a specific radio station, or even have the radio on, to receive updates every few minutes. And you can see everything clearly on the large, high-resolution screen.

Bluetooth wireless technology connects mobile phones enabled with Bluetooth to a vehicle for hands-free calling. With the use of a compatible Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, a driver can place and answer calls, and browse and select phonebook contacts from their phone, simply by using the multifunction steering wheel controls and radio keys.

Vehicles equipped with Bluetooth wireless technology are shipped fully activated, and only require the new owner to complete a simple one-time pairing procedure with a compatible Bluetooth phone. Up to four paired phones can be stored in the car's memory system.

BMW Ultimate Service is included at no charge with all new 2008 BMWs for the first four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. It includes the BMW Maintenance Program, which covers all factory-recommended maintenance and items that need replacement due to normal wear and tear; a New Vehicle Limited Warranty; four-year, unlimited-mileage Roadside Assistance, and, if the vehicle is equipped, a four-year, unlimited mileage subscription to the BMW Assist™ Safety Plan.

Comfort Access system offers an even greater degree of convenience: keyless access to your car. Simply carrying the remote key in a pocket allows you to unlock the doors by touching the door handle. You can also turn the engine on or off by pressing the Start/Stop button* without first inserting the remote key.

When the top is down, the optional Comfort Loading feature offers quicker trunk-loading convenience: with the push of a button on the key fob, the roofstack is lifted out of the trunk, so the storage area can be accessed.

*Foot must be on brake or, with manual transmission, must also depress the clutch in order to start.

Opening in just 22 seconds and closing in 23 seconds, the power retractable hardtop roof gives the Convertible a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette and improves the vehicle's torsional stiffness, making an already solid ride that much better.

The hardtop liner is also designed to insulate the cabin from outside noise, while keeping the interior comfortably warmed or cooled. And when the top is up, the variable partition that separates its storage compartment from the trunk can be moved, creating more usable trunk space.

iPod/iPhone USB Integrated System

When we wanted to connect an MP3 player directly to our vehicle's sound system, we went straight to the experts at Apple. Together, we created the world's first seamless integrated system of iPod and automobile. Just plug your iPod or iPhone into the adapter accessory. Control the volume and your playlists through the multifunction steering wheel, while your iPod or iPhone stays out of view with a constant flow of power. There's also a convenient, standard auxiliary input jack, which allows you to play any MP3 through the audio system.

HD Radio

HD Radio broadcasting is the new, digital standard for AM and FM radio stations. Across the United States, over 1300 AM/FM stations have upgraded to HD Radio technology, with over 600 of the FM stations also offering new, HD Radio-only "multicast" channels, vastly increasing programming choice. HD Radio stations are broadcast in crystal-clear digital sound and offer innovative data services, such as song artist and title scrolling across the screen. HD Radio is totally subscription free from your local AM and FM radio stations, once your car is equipped with an HD Radio receiver. Logic7 Audio System

It's a sound experience as remarkable as the BMW driving experience. Unlike traditional stereo systems, Logic7 routes two-channel (stereo) sound through a seven-channel playback matrix to create 360-degree Surround Sound. The anti-theft AM/FM stereo CD/MP3 player audio system includes 13 upgraded speakers (including 2 subwoofers), Digital Sound Processing (DSP), Radio Data System (RDS), Auto-Store and 3-channel FM diversity antenna, and it displays MP3 song title and artist.

6-speed STEPTRONIC with Paddle Shifters

Can a vehicle be too responsive? Not if you're looking for a dynamic performance that actually adapts to the way you drive. Our 6-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission adapts to every driver differently, resulting in improved gear shifting, a more responsive performance, and reduced fuel consumption.

It operates in three modes: sport, which features higher shift points for more lively response; drive, which incorporates BMW's Adaptive Transmission Control; and manual, which allows the driver to assume control of gear selection.

In short, 6-speed automatic transmission provides faster, smoother shifting and enhanced fuel-economy. And if equipped with our Formula 1 inspired steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, you can upshift and downshift quickly without using a clutch.

Active Steering

When BMW first introduced Active Steering to the market in 2003, our drivers weren't the only ones who were impressed. It received the Innovation Award of German Industry, too. The technology allows for a variable steering ratio based on your speed. At low speeds, steering is nimble (10:1) for easy navigation in tight spaces. At high speeds, greater movement of the steering wheel is required to turn the front wheels the same amount (18:1), for increased stability. Most car companies split the difference with a constant 14:1 ratio, but we're not ones to compromise - even with our steering ratio.

Direct Injection Technology

At the heart of our 300-horsepower, 3.0-liter, inline six turbocharged engine is our direct fuel injection system with advanced piezo injector technology.

Unlike traditional fuel injection, which calls for fuel to be injected before the intake valves, BMW's Direct Fuel Injection feeds fuel directly into each cylinder, increasing fuel economy, power, torque and emissions control.

It also rewards the driver with greater torque for quick response, low speed acceleration and power on demand in all driving conditions.

3.0-liter, TwinPower Turbocharged 6-cylinder engine

Generating 300 hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque at 1400-1500 rpms, this advanced inline six is our first turbocharged engine offered in the U.S. in decades. Turbo lag has been virtually eliminated, thanks to Double-VANOS "steplessly" variable valve timing, direct fuel injection, and BMW's inspired use of the latest TwinPower Turbo technology. By using direct fuel injection - a high precision fuel injection system - we have overcome the traditionally poor gas mileage of turbocharging. The engine's innovative design includes an all-aluminum engine block with cast iron sleeves for durability, and a direct fuel injection system that also cools the engine. A cooler engine allows for a higher compression ratio (10.2:1 vs. 6:1 and 7:1 in other turbos), which translates into superior emission control, greater fuel efficiency and, most importantly, a thrilling performance.

With BMW Assist, you have a direct connection to the BMW Assist Response Center, any time, day or night. If you're in an accident, need roadside assistance or have a customer service question, just push a button from within your vehicle to speak with a response specialist. If you're in a serious accident, crash sensors will trigger the system for you. And, if your car is stolen, you can access stolen vehicle recovery services by phone.

In addition, BMW Assist includes: TeleService, an exclusive BMW feature that allows your car to communicate its service needs directly to your preferred BMW Center.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Calling, which links a compatible Bluetooth enabled mobile phone to your vehicle for hands-free calling. You can make and answer calls, and browse and select phonebook contacts using steering wheel controls, radio keys or voice commands.

These self-supporting tires with integrated reinforcements allow tires that have experienced a loss of air pressure to maintain their shape and full use. In fact, you can drive on a flat for up to 150 miles at reduced speeds, so you don't have to stop in an unsafe area to change a tire or wait for roadside assistance.*

Using built-in sensors to continually monitor multiple variables - such as speed, steering angle, yaw, brake pressure and traction - our Dynamic Stability Control system can detect and, more importantly, help correct the loss of wheel traction immediately. All of which helps to keep you in control, no matter what the circumstances.

Xenon Adaptive Headlights

Our Xenon Adaptive Headlights with distinctive corona rings began as a groundbreaking idea that went on to become a major advancement in safety. Using an electromechanical system, our adaptive headlights follow the direction of the wheels. So as you begin cornering, the headlights turn into and around the bend, which allows you to see more of the road, sooner. Xenon lights, another BMW innovation, help provide clarity by emitting twice as much light as halogen light, while using half as much energy.
