How do you take a breakthrough vehicle and make it better? Behold the BMW X5. A powerful 350-hp V-8, and added room to an already sophisticated interior, deliver pure performance and total refinement all at once.

Dual-glass-panel Panoramic Moonroof features fully electric slide and lift control. Includeds trap release, comfort opening/closing function, a wind deflector to help keep the wind out and an electric sun shade to help shield cabin from excessive heat.

With the route taken care of, you can concentrate on more important things - like enjoying every twist and turn along the way. Our optional onboard navigation system, controlled via iDrive, uses GPS satellites, a digital map and, where available, Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) to guide you to your destination. Choose the fastest route, the shortest route or the one that avoids traffic. Where available, traffic information is received by a separate radio tuner and then displayed on the navigation system. You don't have to listen to a specific radio station, or even have the radio on, to receive updates every few minutes. And you can see everything clearly on the large, high-resolution screen.

It's a simple idea, really: the better your focus is on the road, the more in control you'll be of any driving situation. Our optional Head-Up Display* gives you the ability to see relevant information such as speed and navigation directions, without the need to look down and lose sight of what's ahead of you. The readout appears just beyond the windshield, in your line of vision. It is clear, easy to read, and even responds to light, adjusting its brightness for daytime, nighttime or hazy conditions, so driving is more enjoyable. * Not available with green band windshield.

Comfort Access system offers an even greater degree of convenience: keyless access to your car. Simply carrying the remote key in a pocket allows you to unlock the doors by touching the door handle. You can also turn the engine on or off by pressing the Start/Stop button* without first inserting the remote key.

*Foot must be on brake or, with manual transmission, must also depress the clutch in order to start.

Life demands flexibility. So we've designed the X5 to be as comfortable for seven people as it is capable at hauling cargo. Not only have we added the convenience of an optional third-row seat, but we've made it versatile enough to fit your many needs. Because the second row acts as two independent seats, it's easy to get in and out, from either the right or left sides. And since the seats also fold flat, you enjoy optimal cargo capacity.

iPod/iPhone USB Integrated System

When we wanted to connect an MP3 player directly to our vehicle's sound system, we went straight to the experts at Apple. Together, we created the world's first seamless integrated system of iPod and automobile. Just plug your iPod or iPhone into the adapter accessory. Control the volume and your playlists through the multifunction steering wheel, while your iPod or iPhone stays out of view with a constant flow of power. There's also a convenient, standard auxiliary input jack, which allows you to play any MP3 through the audio system.

HD Radio™

HD Radio™ broadcasting is the new, digital standard for AM and FM radio stations. Across the United States, over 1300 AM/FM stations have upgraded to HD Radio technology, with over 600 of the FM stations also offering new, HD Radio-only "multicast" channels, vastly increasing programming choice. HD Radio stations are broadcast in crystal-clear digital sound and offer innovative data services, such as song artist and title scrolling across the screen. HD Radio is totally subscription free from your local AM and FM radio stations, once your car is equipped with an HD Radio receiver. Rear Entertainment System

Give your back-seat passengers more to watch than the passing scenery. The X5 boasts an optional rear-seat entertainment system with a vibration-resistant display and optional wireless headphones - allowing you and your front-seat passenger to simultaneously enjoy your own music.

The vehicle's standard sound system comes with a seven-channel digital amplifier that delivers 205 watts of power, complete with subwoofers that are discreetly hidden under the front seats. And an auxiliary input lets you plug in your own iPod or other audio devices so you can enjoy a personal soundtrack for every trip you take.

xDrive, intelligent all-wheel-drive system

Unlike other all-wheel-drive systems, we've built ours with rear wheel bias for surefooted grip on slick roads, without sacrificing the feel of rear wheel drive. It smartly sends power to the wheel or wheels with the surest footing - and it does so in milliseconds. That means under normal conditions, drive forces are spread out with a rear-wheel bias. But the moment the system senses excessive wheel slip, it subtly shifts torque to meet the changing conditions, offering maximum available traction and superior handling on all surfaces.

4.8-liter, V-8 engine, 350 hp

The 4.8-liter V-8 engine produces 350 horsepower at 6300 rpm, and 360 lb-ft torque at 3400 rpm. The balanced and virtually unrivaled performance it delivers is achieved through ultra-precise engineering and advanced technologies including Valvetronic and Double-VANOS.

Double VANOS

Double VANOS allows the engine to "steplessly" choose valve timing for both intake and exhaust camshafts. Electronically controlled in response to engine speed, load and temperature, Double VANOS maximizes engine response, efficiency and emission control. The benefit: more low- to medium-speed torque for strong acceleration and added flexibility for better highway performance, plus a quieter, smoother engine at idle.

Active Steering

When BMW first introduced Active Steering to the market in 2003, our drivers weren't the only ones who were impressed. It received the Innovation Award of German Industry, too. The technology allows for a variable steering ratio based on your speed. At low speeds, steering is nimble (10:1) for easy navigation in tight spaces. At high speeds, greater movement of the steering wheel is required to turn the front wheels the same amount (18:1), for increased stability. Most car companies split the difference with a constant 14:1 ratio, but we're not ones to compromise - even with our steering ratio.

Adaptive Brake Lights

Bumper-to-bumper collisions most often occur when the driver behind you didn't realize how hard you were braking. Our Adaptive Brake Lights help eliminate that scenario by emitting a larger, brighter light the more force you use. It allows those behind you to clearly see whether you're lightly tapping the brakes to slow down or applying full force for a sudden stop.

Park Distance Control, front and rear

So intuitive, it helps you see things you normally can't. Park Distance Control uses eight sensors - four in the front, four in the rear - to measure exactly how far you are from other vehicles and unseen objects when parking. As your bumper approaches a stationary object, the image on the iDrive screen changes and beeping becomes faster, turning into a constant tone when the distance is less than 12 inches.

Run-Flat Tires

These self-supporting tires with integrated reinforcements allow tires that have experienced a loss of air pressure to maintain their shape and full use. In fact, you can drive on a flat for up to 150 miles at reduced speeds, so you don't have to stop in an unsafe area to change a tire or wait for roadside assistance.*

* Cars with run-flat tires do not come equipped with a spare tire. Due to low profile tires, please note that wheels, tires and suspension parts are more susceptible to road hazard and consequential damages.

Rearview Camera

Steer in reverse as confidently as you take to the road. This smart innovation allows you to view the area behind the rear bumper and see small objects that are not ordinarily visible. It even offers interactive track lines that turn along with the steering wheel to help direct your path. And it's all in front of you on the large dashboard monitor, instead of hidden behind you.

Dynamic Stability Control

Nasty weather. Terrible road conditions. A deer crossing. When a driver loses control, there's usually more than one factor involved. Using built-in sensors to continually monitor multiple variables - such as speed, steering angle, yaw, brake pressure and traction - our Dynamic Stability Control system can detect and, more importantly, help correct the loss of wheel traction immediately. All of which helps to keep you in control, no matter what the circumstances.
